According to the Carbon Fiber Experience Center, NASA adopted the new technology “Adaptive Deployable Entry Placement Technology” (adaptive space landing and retraction technology), referred to as ADEPT, to manufacture the world’s first carbon fiber spacecraft heat shield folding umbrella .

As we all know, when the spacecraft enters the atmosphere of the planet, the speed can reach thousands of miles per hour. The high-speed flight will have strong friction with the atmosphere. If it is rubbed for a long time, it will fly to form an ultra-high temperature, which will cause serious damage to the aircraft. Therefore, we must develop a kind of equipment to take away this part of the heat, meanwhile it does not hinder the flight of the aircraft.

As early as 60 years ago, aviation researchers used a special circular shield made of phenolic plastic to carry away this part of the heat. But this shield has many shortcomings. This shield is very bulky and has a good texture. It is expensive and affects the landing of the aircraft. So there is no way to meet the needs of the aircraft.

The carbon fiber folding insulated umbrella has a folding function because of the design of the umbrella. When the insulating umbrella is supported, the formed circular umbrella surface becomes an insulating barrier, thereby protecting the aircraft. When the insulated umbrella is folded, it can be directly stored inside the aircraft, indirectly helping the aircraft to increase the transport load, thus helping humans to explore the space for a long time and a long distance.

The carbon fiber heat shield is woven with carbon fiber material using 3D weaving technology, and then supported by ribs and umbrella stands. The carbon fiber on the surface is an important barrier to protect the safe flight and safe landing of the aircraft, while the umbrella design enhances the resistance. , playing a deceleration role.

Paul Wercinski, head of the ADEPT project, said: “The breakthrough in carbon fiber application technology is the key to the realization of this technology. The insulating surface it is woven with is very tough. Carbon fiber is really suitable for high temperature applications.”
